Just listened to this episode and I agree with most of what you said except for that Canadians are being “chill” about the annexation threats. I think we’re all feeling anxious and uncertain if not fully freaking out, but we tend reign that in a bit because we’re trusting that the U.S. is still a functioning democracy, and that congress force him to stay in his lane. That they’ll limit the extent of damage Trump can do. So far, the checks and balances he’s pushing against are pushing back. Judges are slapping down executive orders, states are fighting back. I think Canadians are in shock.. it feels like the petty and crass prank of a petulant bully. But I don’t think that we’re chill. We’re waiting to see what happens, to see who’s got our back, and we’re trusting that our government is preparing and doing everything they can to protect our sovereignty.

These are all great points! But I think what you’re saying is exactly what I meant by being “chill.” Maybe a better way to have phrased is it that we’re not panicking yet, because we still have some trust in those institutions. I think I’m probably more pessimistic about the ability of those checks and balances to perform their functions. But I would be very happy if I was proven wrong!

Okay, I will concede that point and I thank you for your thoughts as well. The whole thing is very surreal. And what we are seeing every day happen here and down south, can make anyone question reality. Just looking at the unfolding political scandals in my home province, which reek of MAGA corruption and gaslighting, together with what happened just today to President Zelensky, has me more nervous than ever about what will happen to Canada. And I’m seeing that reflected in Canadians’ anger and anxiety every day.
